Causes of Epilepsy

Do you know how to get into this problem, or have you tried to research it more so your close ones can stay out of it?

Well, there is no one reason behind it, but there are many of them, and we should know some of the main ones. Such as:-

1. Genetic causes: In certain cases there is hereditary predisposition for development of epilepsy.

2. Traumatic Brain Injury: Head Injury can cause scar in some important parts of brain which can trigger seizures.

3. CNS infections: certain infections like Tuberculosis and Neurocysticercosis can affect brain.

4. Brain stroke: Ischemic or Hemorrhagic brain stroke can cause epilepsy.

5. Brain tumors: Brain tumors are important cause of epilepsy specially in elderly

6. Developmental Disorders of Brain: They are important cause of epilepsy specially in children.

7. Pre-natal Injury: Damage to the brain during pregnancy or during birth of child can cause epilepsy.

Tests Done for the Diagnosis of Epilepsy

Epilepsy is diagnosed with proper history by the patient and witness who has witnessed the event. Patients may require further investigations to classify epilepsy - EEG and MRI Brain depending on type of Epileptic Syndrome.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is an important diagnostic test in evaluating a patient with possible epilepsy. It records the electrical signals of the brain. It can support for the diagnosis of epilepsy and also assists in classifying the underlying epileptic syndrome.

Video EEG (electroencephalogram) monitoring is a specialized kind of EEG used for diagnosing the cause of seizures. The patient is continuously monitored on a video while their brain activity is simultaneously recorded in an EEG unit. Video EEG helps in recording the seizure episode and simultaneous EEG record can help localizing the area of brain from which seizures are originating. The purpose is to be able to see what happens when you have a seizure or an event that is suspected to be a seizure.

MRI Brain or CT Scan Brain is done to identify the structural causes of Epilepsy.

Available Treatments for Epilepsy

Medications

It mainly includes anti seizure medicines, and this is the most basic treatment that can control 75 %-80% of seizures.

The US FDA has already approved more than 20 anti seizure medicines for use. Any patient can't use any random name medicine without consultation with an epilepsy specialist.

The choice of the medicine depends on various factors, like seizure type, comorbid conditions and other important parameters.

Epilepsy Surgery

For some people, who continue to have seizures on appropriate anti epileptic medications,  the next suitable option is surgery. The patient underwent advanced tests in the form of Video EEG, MRI Brain and PET CT Brain to find a single focus in the brain responsible for seizure origin.  The specialist Neuro surgeon removes that specific area of the brain.

The major surgeries that we provide are temporal lobe resection, hemispherectomy, corpus callosotomy, TPO disconnection and VNS implantation.

Diet Therapies

The ketogenic diet, a diet with high fats and low carbohydrates. It is useful in selected patients with Drug resistant epilepsy and specially in children.
